Kelowna short-term rentals
What Kelowna asks for in an STR fire evacuation plan
Every Kelowna short-term rental licence application needs a fire evacuation plan of the whole unit. Copies stay posted in each rental bedroom and at every entrance and exit.
From the City’s Operator’s Guidebook (April 2025) and Bylaw 11720. Checked 21 October 2026.
What the plan must show
- The operator’s name
- The property’s address
- A responsible person, with a number answered 24 hours a day
- 911
- A meeting point outside
- Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
- Fire extinguishers
- Fire exits
- Windows large enough to be exits
- The bed types in each bedroom, and any sofa beds
- Every level, with each rental bedroom labelled
Where it goes
- With your licence application. Applications must include a complete plan.
- On the wall in each rental bedroom, and at every entrance and exit.
When it changes
- The yearly safety self-evaluation asks you to review and update the posted plan.
- Licences run January to December, and renewals are due by 15 January.
- When a bed, an alarm or a room changes, the plan should change with it.
Safety equipment the City expects
- A 2A10BC fire extinguisher on each floor, wall-mounted and in sight.
- Smoke alarms tested monthly, with a log, and replaced after 10 years.
Questions
Is the plan a fire-safety check?
No. It shows where things are. Not a fire-safety inspection. The city decides on your licence.
Can I draw it myself?
Yes. The City’s own example is a simple marked-up floor plan. What matters is that every item is on it and it matches the home.
